Who we are and how Hazel Tree came to be...

We are Karen Starr and Jon Haidet, partners in business and in life, and we are the owners and operators of Hazel Tree Interiors.

Hazel Tree was born from the dream that one day we would merge our two home-based businesses (then called 821 Design Picture Framing and Karen Starr ReDesign) under one roof…and we envisioned it as a quaint little store, with our picture framing and interior design studios woven together.

That day came in early 2010...when Serendipity and perfect timing led us to our new studio space and store on West Market Street, in the old Norka Futon building (you Akronites will know the place!)

The cool, historic, three-story building dates back to 1875. And before the Norka Futon empire started here in the 1980's, it was the studio and store for another interior designer, John P. Mazzola, a well-respected interior designer and historic building preservationist. (He was a remarkable man...ahead of his time.)

Yes, this space was perfect, and we loved the fact that the building was big enough to sell the work of many more local artists and artisans, in addition to housing our design and framing businesses.

So we got to work! In three months, we got the keys, knocked down walls, opened up more space, painted every inch of wall inside, wallpapered the 18' x 30' "newspaper wall", gathered collections of local art, had some pieces redesigned by our local artisan network to sell, and then opened the doors on July 10, 2010.

When we merged the two businesses and added a third with the showroom, we changed the name to Hazel Tree Interiors (long story that we’d be happy to tell if you ask!) and had an old friend, Kelly James Tighe, paint the 60’ mural on the side of the building to show our love for the city and our support of the arts. (People told us we were crazy to just put a mural and not our name on the side of the building, but we did it anyway, and have enjoyed our painting and the happiness it brings to the people in our city ever since!)

In early 2017, we met Chelsea Uhl, a graduate of the Savanah College of Art & Design and a talented designer and custom textile maker. We were thrilled when Chelsea joined our Hazel Tree team in February of 2017 as a full-time Interior Designer.
